Class 06 PROJECT –GROUP ACTIVITY -INTEGERS

 PROJECT –GROUP ACTIVITY -INTEGERS

Objective:

A game for 2 students.

Materials Required:

A grid, drawn up as shown below. 2 dice (1 red, 1 white), a blue and a red pen. One student has the blue pen, the other has the red pen.

Method:

The students take it in turn to throw the two dice together. The number on the red die is taken to be negative and the number on the white die is taken to be positive.

The increase is taken as the score. For instance, if the number on the red die is four, this is taken as-4, if the number on the white die is one, this is taken as + 1; the increase from -4 to +1 is 5, so the score would be 5. The student takes a square on the grid by colouring a square which has the score.

Rules:

If all the squares with a student's score have already been coloured, no square can be taken at this turn.

The winner is the first student to have taken 13 of the squares.

Class 06 PROJECT –FUN ACTIVITY

 PROJECT –FUN ACTIVITY

Ask a friend to choose any 3 x 3 grid on a calendar month and draw a box around it.

Tell  your friend that you can instantly give the total of all the nine numbers in the box. This is how you do it.

Take the smallest number in the square and add 8 to it. In this example, 9 + 8 =  17

Multiply that answer by nine. So 17 x 9 = 153

Ask your numbers friend to check by actually taking the total of all nine numbers.

9 + 10 + 11 + 16 + 17 + 18+ 23 + 24 + 25 = 153

Try this out with another box of nine numbers.

This works for any month of any year.

Class 06 Napier's Rods for Multiplication

 PROJECT – NAPIER’S ROD

Topic:

Napier's Rods for Multiplication.

Objective:

To construct and demonstrate the use of a set Napier's rods

Materials Required:

Chart paper, geometry box, sketch pens of, a pair of scissors., fevicol, etc.

Procedure

Step 1: Make all the strips shown in Fig. 1 on chart paper and cut. These strips are called Napier's Rods.

 (A) To multiply  a 2-digit number by a single-digit.

Example: 36 x 5

PROJECT – NAPIER’S ROD

Step 2.:

To multiply 36 x 5, keep the 3-strip and 6-strip

next to the x-strip as shown in Fig.

To find the product, add the numbers diagonally.

Hence, 36 x 5 = 180.

PROJECT – NAPIER’S ROD
(B) To multiply a 3 -digit  number by a single-digit.
Example : 539  X 8.
Step 3 To  multiply 539 x 8, Keep 5-strip, 3-strip and 9-strip next to X-strip as shown in Fig

Add the numbers diagonally to get the product.
Hence, 539 x 8 = 4312

 PROJECT- VEDIC MATHEMATICS

Objective:

To introduce some interesting and single step methods of calculations from Vedic Mathematics. -Long multiplication by Vedic Mathematics

Vedic Mathematics is our age-old mathematics from the Vedas. It is amazing to note that Vedic Mathematics is a part of mathematics syllabus in schools.

Given below are some very simple examples for you to appreciate Vedic Mathematics.

To multiply by numbers having digit 9 only, i.e., 9, 99, 999, 9999, ....

(1) When a single-digit number is multiplied by 9.

Example: 8 x 9

Method:

Step 1. Reduce 8 by 1 to get 7= 72

Step 2. Subtract 7 from 9 to get 2

PROJECT- VEDIC MATHEMATICS

(ii) When a two-digit number is multiplied by 9.

Example: Multiply: 68 x 99

Long method:

Single-step method (Vedic Mathematics Method)

Step 1. 68-1 = 67

6 8 X 9 9

(Subtract 1 from the first number.)

Step 2.

99-67 = 32

(Subtract each digit obtained in step 1 from 9.)

 68 x 99 = 6732

68 x 99 = 6732

PROJECT- VEDIC MATHEMATICS

(iii) When a three-digit number is multiplied by 999.

Example: 439 x 999

Long Method Single-step method (Vedic Mathematics Method)

439 x 999 = 438561

(iv) 60 x 999 = 060 x 999 = 059940 = 59940

Do Yourself:

Multiply the Vedic Mathematics

678 x 999  2. 3678 x 9999999 3. 80705070 X 99999999

4. 5049 X 9999 5. 86945 x 99999
