📘 How Finger Math Works

🤙 Multiply numbers from 6 to 10

Palms facing down, number your fingers 6 to 10, thumb to pinky, on each hand. Fold the finger for each number: touch the two folded fingers together. The folded fingers (touching + below) give the tens digit; the standing fingers above on each hand, multiplied together, give the ones digit.

Example: 7 x 8 → Folded: 2 + 3 = 5 tens (50) · Standing: 3 x 2 = 6 ones → 50 + 6 = 56
Algebra: for a = L-5, b = R-5: (5+a)(5+b) = 10(a+b) + (5-a)(5-b)

🤟 Multiply numbers from 11 to 15

Number your fingers 11 to 15, thumb to pinky, on each hand. Count the extra fingers above 10 on each hand - add them, multiply by 10, and add to a base of 100. Then multiply the two "extra" counts for the last part.

Example: 12 x 13 → Extra: 2 + 3 = 5 → 100 + 50 = 150 · Extra product: 2 x 3 = 6 → 150 + 6 = 156
Algebra: for a = L-10, b = R-10: (10+a)(10+b) = 100 + 10(a+b) + a·b

9️⃣ Remember the times table for 9

Hold up all ten fingers. To find 9 x n, bend down finger number n. Fingers to the left of the bend give the tens digit; fingers to the right give the ones digit.

Example: 9 x 3 → 2 fingers before, 7 fingers after → 27
Algebra: 9n = 10n - n = (n-1)x10 + (10-n)
