Concepts and Formulas

Number and Place Value

Place value: Each digit has a value depending on its position. In 4,507,216, the digit 5 has a value of 500,000.
Rounding: Look at the digit to the right of the place you are rounding to. If it is 5 or more, round up.
Negative numbers: Numbers less than zero. On a number line, -5 is less than -2.
Roman numerals: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Key conversions: One half = 0.5 = 50%. One quarter = 0.25 = 25%. Three quarters = 0.75 = 75%.
One fifth = 0.2 = 20%. Two fifths = 0.4 = 40%. Three fifths = 0.6 = 60%. Four fifths = 0.8 = 80%.
One eighth = 0.125 = 12.5%. Three eighths = 0.375. Five eighths = 0.625. Seven eighths = 0.875.
Adding fractions: Find a common denominator, then add the numerators, then simplify.
Multiplying fractions: Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
Dividing fractions: Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
Percentage of an amount: Divide the percentage by 100, then multiply by the amount.

Ratio and Algebra

Ratio: The total number of parts is the sum of the numbers in the ratio. Each part equals the total divided by the number of parts.
Simplifying ratios: Divide both sides by the highest common factor.
Scale: Real length equals model length multiplied by the scale factor.
Linear sequences: The nth term is an plus b, where a is the common difference.
Solving equations: Do the inverse operations in reverse order.

Measurement

Length: 10 millimetres = 1 centimetre. 100 centimetres = 1 metre. 1000 metres = 1 kilometre.
Mass: 1000 grams = 1 kilogram. 1000 kilograms = 1 tonne.
Capacity: 1000 millilitres = 1 litre.
Time: 60 seconds = 1 minute. 60 minutes = 1 hour. 24 hours = 1 day.
Perimeter: Rectangle = 2 times (length + width). Square = 4 times side.
Area: Rectangle = length times width. Triangle = half times base times height. Parallelogram = base times height.
Volume: Cuboid = length times width times height. Cube = side cubed.

Geometry

Angles on a straight line: Add up to 180 degrees.
Angles around a point: Add up to 360 degrees.
Angles in a triangle: Add up to 180 degrees.
Angles in a quadrilateral: Add up to 360 degrees.
Reflection in the x-axis: (x, y) becomes (x, -y).
Reflection in the y-axis: (x, y) becomes (-x, y).
Reflection in the line y = x: (x, y) becomes (y, x).
Translation: Each vertex moves by the same amount in the same direction.

Statistics

Mean: Add all the values together, then divide by the number of values.
Range: The largest value minus the smallest value.
Pie charts: The whole circle is 360 degrees and represents the total.
Bar charts and line graphs: Read the axes carefully to work out the scale.
