Class 06 A game for a group

 ACTIVITY - ALGEBRA

Objective:

A game for a group

Preparation:

Copy these cards. Make three of each.

The Game

The dealer gives 3 cards (face down) to each player; then places the next card face up on the table with the remainder of the pack face down beside the upturned card.

The object of the game is to get a set of 3 cards that make a correct statement.

For example,

is a winning set of 3 cards   since 3(n-2) = 3n-6

ACTIVITY - ALGEBRA

Procedure:

The dealer plays first; then the other players in turn, beginning with the player on the dealer's left.

When it is a person's turn to play he may either

say the 3 cards in their hand is a winning set.

or (ii) pick up the card face up on the table if he thinks this card will help him get a winning set and discard one of the cards from his hand.

or (iii) pick up a card from the pack and discard one of the cards from his hand.

Rules:

No card on the table may be picked up unless it is on the top of the upturned pile.

The first person to get a winning set of 3 cards scores 1 point and is the dealer for the next round.

If a player declares a winning set which is in fact not a winning set, this player loses one point.

The game is over after a set, time (15 minutes is reasonable).

The winner is the person with the highest score when the time is up.

Each player should keep a score card and enter a tick  √ for each point scored or lost.

Class 06 Forming angles through paper folding

 ACTIVITY – BASIC GEOMETRICAL IDEAS

Objective:

Forming angles through paper folding

Materials Required:

Paper, Pencil and a sheet of white paper.

Procedure:

Take a sheet of paper.

2. Fold the sheet of paper equally on the half.

3. Unfold the paper. After unfolding it, two 90 ° angles are marked on the crease of the paper.

ACTIVITY – BASIC GEOMETRICAL IDEAS
4. Now, fold again one side of 90 ° angle in a triangular shape (see figure).
Two 45 ° angles will be formed which is half of 90 °.

5. Take another sheet of paper. Fold it twice to make three equal parts.

ACTIVITY- BASIC GEOMETRICAL IDEAS
6. Now, unfold the paper and count the number of angles formed.
Measure each of the angles.
7. Fold again one side of 60 ° angle into half in a triangular shape.
On unfolding two 30 °angles are formed.

8. By folding again one of the two 30 ° angles on half, we can create two new angles of 15° each.

Class 06 Nets of a Tetrahedron

ACTIVITY- UNDERSTANDING ELEMENTARY SHAPES

II. Nets of a Tetrahedron

Some nets are given below.

Draw each net on a squared paper and cut it out. Fold the net along its edges. In each case see if the net can be used to make a tetrahedron.

ACTIVITY- UNDERSTANDING ELEMENTARY SHAPES

II. Nets of a Tetrahedron  - SOLUTION

(i) yes

(ii)No

(iii) Yes

(iv) No

Class 06 Studying the nets of 3D shapes

ACTIVITY – Understanding Elementary Shapes

Objective:

Studying the nets of 3D shapes.

Materials Required:

Some thick sheets of squared paper, scissors, sketch pen, etc.

Procedure:

Nets of Cubes

Some nets are given below:

Draw each net on a squared paper and cut it out. Fold the net along its edges. In each case see if the net can be used to make a cube. If the resulting figure is a cube, determine which edge meets AB.

ACTIVITY – Understanding Elementary Shapes
Nets of cubes - Solution
(i) DE meets AB
(ii) Cannot make a cube
(iii) Cannot make a cube
(iv) FG meets AB
(v) AN meets AB
(vi) Cannot make a cube
(vii)  AN meets AB
(viii)  Cannot make a cube
(ix)  IH meets AB
(x) Cannot make a cube
(xi) AN meets AB
(xii)  ED meets AB
