Decimals chapter concept of 11 plus exam GL assessment examination
#### **1. Understanding Place Value**
The key to decimals is understanding that each digit to the right of the decimal point represents a fraction with a denominator of 10, 100, 1000, etc.
* **Tenths (0.1):** The first digit after the decimal. `1/10`
* **Hundredths (0.01):** The second digit after the decimal. `1/100`
* **Thousandths (0.001):** The third digit after the decimal. `1/1000`
**Example:** In the number 45.367
* `4` is 4 tens (40)
* `5` is 5 units (5)
* `3` is 3 tenths (`3/10` or 0.3)
* `6` is 6 hundredths (`6/100` or 0.06)
* `7` is 7 thousandths (`7/1000` or 0.007)
So, 45.367 = 40 + 5 + 0.3 + 0.06 + 0.007
#### **2. Adding & Subtracting Decimals**
**Golden Rule:** **Line up the decimal points!** You can add zeroes to the right to help keep everything aligned.
**Example (Addition):** 12.45 + 3.8
```
12.45
+ 3.80
--------
16.25
```
**Example (Subtraction):** 7.5 - 2.34
```
7.50
- 2.34
--------
5.16
```
#### **3. Multiplying Decimals**
1. Multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers (ignore the decimal points).
2. Count the **total number of decimal places** in both of the original numbers.
3. Place the decimal point in your answer so it has the same total number of decimal places.
**Example:** 1.3 × 0.25
1. 13 × 25 = 325
2. 1.3 has 1 decimal place, 0.25 has 2. Total = 3 decimal places.
3. Answer: 0.325
#### **4. Dividing Decimals**
The easiest way is to make the divisor a whole number.
**Example:** 6.84 ÷ 0.4
1. Multiply both numbers by 10 (to make the divisor, 0.4, a whole number): 68.4 ÷ 4
2. Now do the division: `4 goes into 6 one time (1), remainder 2. Bring down 8, making 28. 4 goes into 28 seven times (7). Bring down 4. 4 goes into 4 one time (1).`
3. The answer is 17.1
#### **5. Converting between Decimals, Fractions & Percentages**
* **Decimal to Fraction:** Write the decimal as the numerator and use 1 followed by zeros (10, 100, 1000) as the denominator based on the place value. Then simplify.
* `0.7 = 7/10`
* `0.35 = 35/100 = 7/20`
* `0.125 = 125/1000 = 1/8`
* **Fraction to Decimal:** Divide the numerator by the denominator.
* `3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75`
* `1/8 = 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125`
* **Decimal to Percentage:** Multiply by 100 and add the % sign.
* `0.89 = 0.89 × 100 = 89%`
* `0.04 = 4%`
* **Percentage to Decimal:** Divide by 100 (or move the decimal point two places to the left).
* `75% = 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75`
* `5% = 0.05`

### **Answer Key & Solutions**
#### **Part 2: 10 Practice Questions**
1. **7 hundredths** or `7/100`
2. **17.97** `(5.67 + 12.30)`
3. **5.83** `(8.40 - 2.57)`
4. **2.1** `(35 × 6 = 210, 2 total decimal places = 2.10 -> 2.1)`
5. **182** `(9.1 ÷ 0.05 = 910 ÷ 5 = 182)`
6. **13/20** `(0.65 = 65/100 = 13/20)`
7. **0.375** `(3 ÷ 8 = 0.375)`
8. **8%** `(0.08 × 100 = 8%)`
9. **£3.05** `(Total = £5.75 + £1.20 = £6.95. Change = £10.00 - £6.95 = £3.05)`
10. **6 lengths** `(2.5 ÷ 0.4 = 6.25, so 6 full lengths can be cut)`
#### **Part 4: GL Style Questions**
1. **B) 5.67**
*Solution:*
```
14.07
- 8.40
--------
5.67
```
2. **A) 1.95**
*Solution: 325 × 6 = 1950. Total decimal places = 2 + 1 = 3. So, 1.950 -> 1.95*
3. **A) 0.16**
*Solution: 4 ÷ 25 = 0.16*
4. **B) £0.40**
*Solution: £4.80 ÷ 12 = £0.40*
5. **C) 5.91**
*Solution: Compare digit by digit from the left: Units: all 5. Tenths: 0 (A), 9 (B), 9 (C), 1 (D). Between B and C, compare hundredths: B is 5.90, C is 5.91. So C is largest.*
6. **B) 0.57**
*Solution: 4.56 ÷ 8 = 0.57*
7. **C) Tom**
*Solution: The smallest time wins. 14.75 (Tom) < 14.8 (Ben) < 15.02 (Amy).*
8. **B) 0.15**
*Solution: 15% = 15/100 = 0.15*
9. **A) 2.1kg**
*Solution: 0.35kg × 6 = 2.10kg*
10. **C) 0.04 × 120**
*Solution: 0.4 × 12 = 4.8. Check each option: A) 4 × 1.2 = 4.8, B) 40 × 0.12 = 4.8, C) 0.04 × 120 = 4.8, D) 0.2 × 24 = 4.8. They ALL give 4.8. There is an error in the question. If this were a real exam, you would flag it. For practice, the intended answer is likely C, as the others are direct multiples of the original, while C changes the decimal place value more significantly. A better "NOT" question would be `0.4 x 12 = 4.8`, and `0.2 x 24 = 4.8`, `4 x 1.2 = 4.8`, `0.8 x 6 = 4.8`, `0.04 x 120 = 4.8`. They all give the same answer. The question is flawed.*
***Correction for a valid question:** Let's change option D to `0.2 × 2.4`. Now, `0.2 × 2.4 = 0.48`, which is NOT 4.8. So the correct answer would then be **D**.*
Good luck with your preparation! Consistent practice is the key to mastering decimals.
