Class 06 To find the equivalent fractions of a given fraction

 ACTIVITY FRACTIONS

Objective:

To find the equivalent fractions of a given fraction.

Materials Required:

Some thick sheets of paper (or cardboard), scissors, sketch pen, pencil, etc.

Procedure:

I. To find some equivalent fractions of 𝟏/𝟑

On a thick sheet of paper, draw four rectangles of equal dimensions.

2. Divide the rectangle (i) into three equal parts, the rectangle (ii) into 6 equal parts, the rectangle (iii) into 9 equal parts and the rectangle (iv) into 12 equal parts as shown below.

ACTIVITY FRACTIONS
3. Shade 2 parts, 4 parts, 6 parts and 8 parts of rectangles (1), (ii), (iii) and (iv) respectively. The shaded parts in rectangles (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) show  𝟏/𝟑 , 𝟐/𝟔,𝟑/𝟗 and 𝟒/(𝟏𝟐 ) respectively.

4. Using scissors, cut out the shaded part of each rectangle and compare the strips by putting one over other. You will find that all the strips are of same dimensions.
 Thus, we can say that = 𝟐/𝟓 = 𝟒/𝟏𝟎=𝟔/𝟏𝟓 = 𝟖/(𝟐𝟎 )
Do Yourself:
Using the activity method, find four equivalent fractions of each of the following fractions:1. (  𝟏)/𝟒 2.   𝟐/𝟑 3.   𝟓/𝟔 4.   𝟓/𝟕
