Class 06 Subtracting integers on the number line
ACTIVITY INTEGERS
Objective:
Subtracting integers on the number line.
Materials Required: Some sheets of paper, pen, sketch pen, pencil, etc.
Procedure:
When both the integers are positive .Let us find (+7)-(+ 4).
Using sketch pen draw a number line as shown below:
2. Start from 0 and move 7 steps towards right to reach at 7.3. Since, (+ 7)-(+ 4) is same as (+ 7) + (-4), so from 7 move 4 steps towards left to reach at Thus, (+ 7)-(+ 4) = + 3 = 3.

II. When an integer -is positive and another is negative.
Let us find (-8) - (+5)
Draw a number line as shown below:
-14 -13-12-11-10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
2. Start from 0 and 8 steps towards left to reach at -8.
3. Since, (-8-) - (+ 5) is same as (-8) + (-5), so from 8 move 5 steps towards left to reach at -13. Thus, (-8)-(+5) =-13.

III. When both the integers are negative. Let us find (-9)-(-3)
Draw a number line as shown below:
2. Start from 0 and move 9 steps towards left to reach at -9
3. Since, (-9)-(-3) is same as (-9) + (+3), so from-9, move 3 steps towards right to reach at -6. Thus, (-9)-(-3) = -6.
